Day 50

Temperature: 64 F, feels like 64 F
Humidity: 28%
Dew Point: 30 F
Wind: 5.8 mph NW
Pressure: 29.88 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 4:30 PM
Moon: Waxing Gibbous, 89% visible

Today is very warm and tomorrow is expected to be even warmer because of the continuation of a warm front extending from Canada. There is currently a high pressure system in the center of the country circulating warm temperatures that also contributes to today's warm weather. This morning there was significant advection fog from the ground releasing moisture after the showers the day before and cool morning air blowing over the ground. It was thick enough to cause some concern for driving and took until nearly 11am for it all to burn off. Tomorrow is expected to also be quite warm but with more cloud cover. The warm front combined with the moisture from the clouds could potentially cause thunderstorms tomorrow night, but the current LI index from the Unisys stuve charts is at 10.9 so I would predict that the storms won't hit (if they do at all) until late tomorrow evening after 9-10pm or so.

Day 49

Temperature: 47 F, feels like 47 F
Humidity: 80%
Dew Point: 41 F
Wind: 1 mph N
Pressure: 29.96 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Overcast
Observation: 2:30 PM
Moon: Waxing Gibbous, 81% visible

Right now it is overcast with status clouds at about 6000 ft. A rain shower just passed through the area and brought a little rain, as expected. The sun is slowly starting to make its way through the low cloud level. It is still a bit above average for temperature and even with today's rain, we continue to have a pretty dry spring. Even though there is a cold front to the north of us, the winds are coming in from the west and south. There is currently a high pressure system coming off of the Rockies that will affect the temperatures in our area later in the week, but the band of precipitation over us currently is slow moving is it is expected to stay partly cloudy with higher humidity and chances for showers through Wednesday.

Spring Break

Current Stats in Eau Claire:

Temperature: 29 F, feels like 29 F
Humidity: 43%
Dew Point: 10 F
Wind: 1.7 mph WSW
Pressure: 30.20 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 9:30 PM
Moon: First Quarter, 58% visible

Currently in Eau Claire there is high pressure system in the area which brought sunshine and very few clouds into the area today. Coming in from the west there is a low pressure system tied to a warm front behind a pocket of precipitation, but it should hold off hitting the ground until Sunday morning. The winds are pretty calm across the United States as there is a huge storm off the eastern sea board which is where most of the energy is focused right now.

I have been in Chicago all week on vacation, and there was a pretty interesting weather swing while I was there.

On our way down there was snow falling in Eau Claire and a little snow had fallen in Chicago once we arrived, however throughout our travels in the whole state of Wisconsin, there were obvious pockets where the storm hadn't even come close. (For example, there was no snow in Wausau, which was a stop along our route to see family). Monday and Friday were the coldest days in Chicago, with an obvious warm front and pressure system moving through the area during the week. Wednesday was the warmest day at around 55 F while Monday and Friday it was only a high of around 35 F. It was frequently overcast most of the week but the only precipitation (light snow) occurred Monday before we arrived and Friday morning before we woke up and melted quickly.

On our way back into Eau Claire, the skies were sunny and mostly clear, but there were some really nice mare's tails that I sadly couldn't get a picture of because I was driving.

March 19, 2015

Day 48

Temperature: 48 F, feels like 47 F
Humidity: 34%
Dew Point: 20 F
Wind: 5 mph SW, up to 12 mph gusts
Pressure: 30.08 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Overcast
Observation: 4:30 PM
Moon: Waning Crescent, 0% visible

High altitude stratus clouds are keeping a consistent cover over the area. There is pretty low humidity and no precipitation has fallen today. The high pressure system and partly cloudy skies that were here this morning have moved along to be replaced by a low pressure system and stationary front/cold front coming down from Canada. The clouds have raised the air temperature to the mid 50s but the wind is still cool, even if it is coming in from the S/SW.

March 17, 2015

Day 46

Temperature: 44 F, feels like 44 F
Humidity: 21%
Dew Point: 7 F
Wind: 2 mph NNE
Pressure: 30.39 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 6:00 PM
Moon: Waning Crescent, 9% visible

Today was much cooler than yesterday because of the cold front that came down from Canada. There is a high pressure system over the area which is causing clear skies and a warm air temperature. However, the cold front with winds from the north definitely required more of a coat than we had been used to the past week. Another high pressure system tied to a stationary front will come through the area the next couple of days and keep temperatures hovering around 50 during the day, but the low fronts that are on the west coast currently are expected to come to the area and drop temperatures next week to highs in the late 30s/mid 40s. There is no precipitation expected until the middle of next week and even then the hypothetical amounts are very small. Here is a look at the jet stream for tomorrow that will bring in cloud cover that will raise the surface temperatures a little bit (today was a high of 45 but sunny, tomorrow will be overcast and around 49):

March 16, 2015

Day 45

Temperature: 61.3 F, feels like 61.3 F
Humidity: 39%
Dew Point: 36 F
Wind: 2 mph N
Pressure: 29.79 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Overcast
Observation: 3:00 PM
Moon: Waning Crescent, 18% visible

The warm temperatures continue but today the winds have changed and are coming down from the north with the cold front that is over the area. It has been overcast all day, but still very dry with little chance of precipitation in our area and intermittent showers to the north of us. We may have a biref shower later this evening after sunset. Tomorrow the temperatures are supposed to be much lower (mid 40s) as a low pressure system with a stationary front bringing cooler air will meet a high pressure system which will drop the temperatures but continue to limit moisture in the air.

Here is a pictures of the alto cumulus clouds that were over campus this morning:

March 15, 2015

Day 43 + 44

Temperature: 63.9 F, feels like 63.9 F
Humidity: 41%
Dew Point: 40 F
Wind: 11.9 mph SW
Pressure: 30.03 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Partly cloudy
Observation: 5:00 PM
Moon: Waning Crescent, 27% visible

This weekend was very pleasant. Both days were in the 50s/60s but the wind has definitely picked up significantly today. The wind is still coming from the Southwest, but has picked up in strength and frequency of gusts. There is currently wispy looking cloud cover high in the atmosphere which I believe are altostratus clouds.

A low pressure system is expected to come into the area tomorrow and could bring a slight chance of precipitation. On Tuesday the temperature is expected to drop significantly to around the mid 40s for highs for the next week due to the presence of a cold front coming from Canada. There is still very little chance for precipitation expected which will contribute to the continuing drought like conditions across the Midwest and West coast.

March 13, 2015

Day 42

Temperature: 56.7 F, feels like 56.7 F
Humidity: 57%
Dew Point: 41 F
Wind: 2 mph SW
Pressure: 30.03 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 1:00 PM
Moon: Waning Gibbous, 50% visible

Today is another warm day in the state of Wisconsin! The humidity has risen significantly because of the cloud cover from a low pressure system over the area. The low pressure system is attached to a cold front, so I predict that tonight will be cooler than last night. Last night it was still around 52 F at 10 pm!  The next few days are expected to be partly cloudy but with little to no chance of precipitation. The rain and snow currently on the west coast may make it to us by the middle of this next week if it is powerful enough to make it over the Rockies.

March 11, 2015

Day 40

Temperature: 56 F, feels like 56 F
Humidity: 40%
Dew Point: 32 F
Wind: 2.7 mph NE
Pressure: 30.32 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 6:00 PM
Moon: Waning Gibbous, 68% visible

Today was not as warm as yesterday and there was still frost on the ground at 10am, but it turned out to be a gorgeous day regardless. There was no precipitation and barely any clouds all day. The winds have shifted in the last couple hours and it has gotten a bit cooler as the sun goes down. A cold front from the north is also present which adds to the cooler wind/temperatures. The nights are still very warm however because of the omega high system. I believe the system will move along after this weekend. Temperatures are supposed to be in the mid 40s as a high next week.

March 10, 2015

Day 39

Temperature: 63 F, feels like 63 F
Humidity: 47%
Dew Point: 43 F
Wind: 5.3 mph WSW
Pressure: 29.83 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Partly Cloudy
Observation: 5:00 PM
Moon: Waning Gibbous, 77% visible

Today is absolutely beautiful weather wise. We are in day 3 of the omega high system and there is about 10-20% of the snow left. A cold front will make tomorrow colder than today, but it will still be around a high of 53, but in March in Wisconsin, who cares! The really warm weather should stay through this weekend and cool off to the mid 40s next week. There is currently no chance for precipitation and very little cloud cover until the weekend.

March 9, 2015

Day 38

Temperature: 52 F, feels like 52 F
Humidity: 46%
Dew Point: 43 F
Wind: 4 mph W
Pressure: 30.00 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Partly Cloudy
Observation: 3:00 PM
Moon: Waning Gibbous, 86% visible

Currently there is an Omega High system over the Midwest that has unusually warm temperatures hanging around for the next week. There is a warm air over us and rain/precipitation to the right and left of us. We have little to no chance of precipitation for the next week as well. Temperatures will peak during the day and drop at night, similar to summer weather patterns affected by the sun and air pressure.

March 8, 2015

Day 36 + 37

Temperature: 47 F, feels like 43 F
Humidity: 55%
Dew Point: 43 F
Wind: 9.4 mph WNW
Pressure: 30.06 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 1:00 PM
Moon: Waning Gibbous, 91% visible

This weekend has had some beautiful weather. The winds have been noticeable but mostly warm southerly winds. There is a stationary front coming off of the Rockies and headed our way, so the warm temperatures are supposed to stick around for the entire week. Temperatures are now expected to be in the mid 50's for the next 10 days which is higher than the previous estimation of temperatures in the mid 40s. A high pressure system will be moving into the area by Wednesday and sticking around through the rest of the week so expect mostly clear skies. There is currently no chance of precipitation forecasted and the weather across the United States seems to be pretty stable after last weeks East coast storms.

March 6, 2015

Day 35

Temperature: 32 F, feels like 33 F
Humidity: 42%
Dew Point: 12 F
Wind: 2 mph WSW
Pressure: 30.12 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 1:00 PM
Moon: Full, 99% visible

Bring on the warm front! Today is much warmer than yesterday and marks the beginning of a warm spring week for Wisconsinites. (At least something has to be going well in the state of Wisconsin right now) This weekend is expected to have some clouds, but the rest of next week should be bright and sunny.
Look at this glorious t-shirt weather:

There is little to no precipitation expected this weekend or next week and above average spring temperatures due to the jet stream bringing up warm air from the gulf combined with the warm front over the area. Maybe spring really will come in like a lamb and stay like a lamb this year.

March 5, 2015

Day 34

Temperature: 11.8 F, feels like 2 F
Humidity: 44%
Dew Point: -6 F
Wind: 5.8 mph SSW
Pressure: 30.53 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 2:45 PM
Moon: Full, 100% visible

Today is really cold like yesterday because of the high pressure system over the area. Tomorrow and the whole weekend is going to be much warmer though because there will be a high pressure system over the area and a warm front moving in. The winds have also changed from the north to the south, so warm air is coming into the area again. Even though the air temperature is cold, the sun's warmth is melting snow off of roofs and sidewalks. Spring is finally coming, at least for a little bit.

March 4, 2015

Day 33

Temperature: 4.5 F, feels like 4 F
Humidity: 53%
Dew Point: 23 F
Wind: 1 mph NNE
Pressure: 30.35 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Clear
Observation: 7:30 PM
Moon: Full, 100% visible

Today was bright, sunny, and cold as expected after yesterday's snow. It was pretty windy during the day, but they seemed to have died down a little. It was so windy earlier though that sidewalks were blowing shut and there was a bit of a powder in the air at times. There are still some gusts coming NNE and over the river, so walking along the river road through campus was still a bit nippy. The high pressure system over the area today will stick around through tomorrow. But, as seen on the map below, an amazing warm front will hit our area by Friday and the warm temperatures (MID FORTIES :) ) will stick around through next week.

March 3, 2015

Day 32

Temperature: 24 F, feels like 18 F
Humidity: 91%
Dew Point: 23 F
Wind: 2.2 mph W
Pressure: 29.76 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Scattered clouds
Observation: 6:30 PM
Moon: Waxing gibbous, 97% visible

It started snowing in the wee hours of the morning and in total I believe we got about 5 inches. The snow was light and powdery and accumulated quickly, but ended by 11am. It was warm enough today that it melted off cars and mostly clear sidewalks. Overnight and into tomorrow it will be very cold as the sky will clear and winds will be coming in from the north/north west which will drive temperatures below zero again. But then the winds are expected to shift and southerly winds will warm up the weekend and stay into next week, some days could be in the mid-40s!

March 2, 2015

Day 31

Temperature: 24 F, feels like 18 F
Humidity: 58%
Dew Point: 11 F
Wind: 4.7 SSW mph W
Pressure: 30.29 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Overcast
Observation: 8:00 PM
Moon: Waxing gibbous, 94% visible

Very nice weather out today, lots of people were barely wearing coats. Ah, "t-shirt weather" in Wisconsin.

It was sunny and clear all day from a passing high pressure system. It got cloudier as the evening wore on thought and now we have a winter weather advisory for tomorrow morning 3am-9am where we are expected to get 3-4 inches of snow. The storm is coming with a cold front off the Rockies that has some pockets of heavy snow that will eventually get to us as just an annoying amount of snow; that "to shovel or not to shovel" amount. After the snow passes there will be a couple days of really cold weather again before ramping up into the 40s by next week. I would be surprised if we actually got that warm of weather, or even if we do, I doubt it will stay through March.

March 1, 2015

Day 30

Temperature: 25 F, feels like 18 F
Humidity: 55%
Dew Point: 11 F
Wind: 5.3 mph W
Pressure: 30.26 in
Visibility: 10 miles
Cover: Some clouds
Observation: 5:30 PM
Moon: Waxing gibbous, 88% visible

Today there was a high pressure system over the area again so it was clear, sunny, and a lot warmer than it has been for the past week because of winds coming from the west. The skies were overcast in the morning but cleared around lunch time. There was no precipitation, and none expected tomorrow. Tomorrow should be almost exactly like today but tomorrow night's temperatures will stay warmer than tonight as there is snow expected Tuesday morning. Temperatures are expected to rise (up to 30-40 during the day) in the next week after a sudden cold snap after Tuesday's expected snow.
